Week 4A: Aesthetics, Design, and Branding

Site #1: http://gatesnfences.com/

- Three potential problems for visitors:

The design of the website in it's entirety is extremely busy! In my opinion, it's difficult to pinpoint what the company's name is, and what their company is all about. Also, when visiting Gates N Fences website, it's hard to navigate and find the services needed. Lastly, the text throughout the entire website is hard to read, so visitors would have a real difficult time making out any of the text.

- What could be improved on these websites and why would these improvements help?

A layout for the site would help immensely. There's a lack of organization, and a layout would help gather content. They also need to update their typography so that it's legible for visitors. This would draw in more traffic through their site. The ease of use needs to be taken into consideration. It's difficult to locate links needed, and visitors need to scroll through a lot of content in order to find what they're looking for.

Site #2: http://jamilin.com/

- Three potential problems for visitors:

Even though this site is built within a layout, it's still very busy. A lot of the content is scattered throughout the site without any thought. Also, the typography chosen throughout the site is very basic, and difficult to read throughout the color scheme chosen. Lastly, the links provided throughout the whole site are hard to locate and make out.

- What could be improved on these websites and why would these improvements help?

Within the navigation menu, each link opens into a new window. If the creator had the link open into the same page, it would help save loading time. The social media sites being used are hard to locate within the site. They're hidden inside of the navigation menu, and they should be visible within the banner or footer of the web page. This would help visitors find external links to contact the creator, and this would help the creator further market their site. Finally, the navigation menu is doubled up, and this makes it really busy at the top. When visitors first arrive on the site the navigation menu is the first thing they see, so if this is corrected it would make it easier on the eye when going through the site.

Site #3: https://www.nps.gov/index.htm

Identify what they have right:

The National Park Service has a clean defined template used throughout their site. The navigational menu gives visitors a distinct idea of what the site contains, and what information can be gathered. The column design created makes the layout organized, and the font used is legible. Also, the social media links are clearly visible within the footer of the page.

How does design, aesthetics, and branding impact your reaction to the site?

I felt that this site hit all of the cues for  design, aesthetics, and branding. When visiting this site, it's apparent that it represents the National Park Service. The picture chosen truly reflect the brand, and there is a emblem created to represent them as well. The aesthetic of the site is polished, and the color scheme chosen is a perfect representation of the outdoors! I thought this was a great design for the overall brand.

Site #4: https://www.toyota.com/

Identify what they have right:

Since Toyota is a mainstream brand it's hard to find any errors throughout their site. It's very polished, and all of the information given is organized. The navigation is easy to click through, and the icons designed all function as they should.

How does design, aesthetics, and branding impact your reaction to the site?

The overall design of Toyota's website is pleasing. The color scheme is subtle, and uses red as a strong bold color. Overall, the branding represented is very strong. It's repetitive throughout the site, and uses pictures to help represent that. The aesthetic is cohesive, and it makes it difficult to find anything negative to say.
